Homemade Chocolate Turtles - (lower carb, real ingredients)

Super simple. The smooshed dates and pecans make this recipe taste VERY similar to high sugar Chocolate Turtles. (seriously)

Chocolate Turtles 

Servings: 6

Prep/Cook time: 15 minutes plus 30 minutes to freeze.


  • 6 medium dates, pitted (*note-if they are hard, soak them in hot water for 30 minutes and pat dry)

  • 12 whole pecans

  • 2 oz - 85% dark chocolate, broken into pieces.

  • 1 tsp coconut oil

  • ½ tsp vanilla

  • coarse sea salt


On a piece of parchment paper, take each date and “knead” it so it’s soft and gooey (this is key!).  Form it into a small round ball. Place two pecans on top of the ball and press down to  ¼ - ½” thick.

Put the chocolate pieces in a glass bowl and microwave for 20-30 seconds (depending on your microwave strength) to temper the chocolate.

Check the chocolate for signs of melting by stirring it and to avoid overcooking. Microwave for another 20-second time frame, checking after each cycle. The melting should go quick and should take only 2 cycles. You don’t want to overheat the chocolate, just get it warm enough to melt.

Once it begins to melt, add in the coconut oil and vanilla. It should melt the rest of the way as you stir it.

Take a date/pecan pattie, dip it into the bowl and lightly coat it with chocolate. The goal is to have a very thin date pattie with a thin coat of chocolate.

Place it on parchment paper and sprinkle a little coarse salt on top. Put them into the freezer for about 30 minutes.

Keep them in the freezer until ready to eat.
